Cancelled operations

Cancelled operations – Please note this dataset has been suspended by NHS England due to Covid-19

This dashboard charts cancelled elective operations performance, published quarterly, showing the total number of elective operations (of all types) cancelled by each hospital.  The performance standard for cancelled operations is that patients should be offered a further binding date for their procedure within 28 days of the cancellation (or be funded for the operation at a hospital and date of their choice). The data shows the number of breaches of this standard by hospital.

Data notes

Cancelled operations data is published by the NHS as two separate datasets, relating to elective operations and urgent operations respectively.
The cancelled elective operations data, published quarterly and the focus of this dashboard, shows the total number of elective operations (of all types) cancelled by each hospital.
The performance standard for cancelled operations is that patients should be offered a further binding date for their procedure within 28 days of the cancellation (or be funded for the operation at a hospital and date of their choice). The data further shows how many breaches of this standard there were at each hospital.
Data is sourced from NHS England’s Cancelled Operations dataset, for which detailed notes and the core datasets are available here.
NHS peer groups are defined using NHS Digital’s Peer Finder Tool which identifies each NHS Trust’s closest ten peers based on a list of variables such as attendances, deprivation, patient profile and location profile. Further details are available on the NHS Digital website here.
All data used in these visualisations is available in the public domain and reproduced under the relevant Open Government licence.
